Created and developed in 2022, the ‘Macedon Ranges Augmented Mural Trail‘ placed a temporary mural in each of the nine towns within the Macedon Ranges. From Gisborne to Kyneton, Lancefield to Malsbury, each mural was painted by a different Victorian based artist and the finished mural was then digitally animated with a hidden letter that could only be revealed through augmentation using the EyeJack app.
Animations ranged from giant balls that bounced off the wall, and bucketing rain, to buzzing bees, blossoming flowers, and entrancing pattern effects. The trail promoted visitation throughout the region, and encouraged viewers to physically attend each location in order to unlock the bonus artwork for themself. The whole trail was incentivised to uncover the secret code which then allowed viewers to enter into a prize-pack draw.
Within these extra project details of placemaking and participation lies the true secret of the mural trail; a challenge, an adventure, a call to action that inspires and excites. The limited time nature of the artworks also encouraged people to get out there and discover the murals before it was all too late, a philosophy that aims to encourage more involvement, appreciation, and curiosity from viewers and is especially relevant in the ever-evolving street art sphere.
Just Another curated the list of artists to showcase the talents of emerging and established artists from Melbourne and the local Macedon Ranges area, including Chuck Mayfield, Andre Bruzzese, Ana Akerlund, Alex Sugar, Collagism, Lucy Lucy, Lachlan Philp, Cax One, and George Goodnow. The selected artists represented a wide range of styles, and the work they produced was truly beautiful – but the interactive element hidden within each augmentation is what made them really spectacular!
