Title: Working 9 to 5 to meet deadline, the landscaping team knew they were cutting it fine. Alan hated seeing them get so wound up and, at the last minute, decided to give them a hand.
By: Tinky
Medium: faux greenery and miniature figurines
Bio: Tinky uses vintage, oversized or discarded objects in her miniature dioramas, so that each scene has a comedic undertone, exaggerates a message, or emphasises playful folly. i.e. miniature construction workers might gather to fix a broken egg shell, or a discarded fish-shaped soy sauce container can become “the big catch” for a miniature fishing scene.
Tinky’s miniature artworks are accompanied by witty captions, uploaded on Instagram alongside a photograph of the artwork.
It has been said that Tinky’s miniature dioramas add a sense of surprise and wonder to the streets, with unlikely installations on a pipe or window sill, in a gutter, or a hole-in-the-wall.
Artist Statement: Working under the pseudonym, Tinky, I create small sculptural installations by assembling vintage or found objects with miniature characters and a comedic narrative. Each element of an installation shines a light on the absurdity of an unfolding drama, calamitous undertaking, or playful folly.
Faced with a world of mismatched proportions and unexpected scenarios, each miniature character displays a dream-like determination to make the best of their odd situation – aided and abetted by a darkly humorous caption. My installations shift between activating non-spaces – such as a gutter, or a hole-in-the-wall in streets, buildings and laneways – to curated gallery spaces.
I see my work as an act of forcing the viewer to look at the everyday world and public spaces anew, using comedy as a connector.
