Title: ‘The City of Creat-elaide’

Bio: Lucinda Penn (LCND) is an artist using symbolic imagery and colour theory to explore site-specific stories and human experiences in an amalgamation of art and design. Her work spans large scale murals to digital illustrations, and everywhere in between. Lucinda strives to bring together communities with her LCND Mural Painting Workshops where she engages people of all ages in her mural painting process. Recently she curated ‘Art Work & Wear’ at the Adelaide City library showcasing an artwork and set of workwear of 23 artists working in the city in 2023. She loves upcycling found materials and uses her surplus mural paint in her exhibition practice. Her latest solo show ‘Handle’ uses upcycled kitchen cupboard doors as canvases which retain their ‘handles’ and explore concepts which help us ‘handle’ whatever life throws our way. Lucinda won the 2023 Resene Total Colour Product Award in Auckland, Aaotearoa / New Zealand for her label with 23RD ST Distillery on their ‘Quattro Juniper Gin.’ This project and her mural at Studio Safari for WOTSO Flexspace are finalists in the packaging and spatial categories of the 2023 Australian Graphic Design (AGDA) Awards.

Artwork Statement: This piece is a reflective love letter to my creative experience of Adelaide on Kaurna Land and the gratitude I have towards my home region which has supported me. It shows my journey growing up in the Adelaide hills to my first experience of city art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, represented by the small framed paintings within. These also symbolise the chaotic collection of works covering the walls of the home I now share with other creatives above a restaurant in North Adelaide. There are references to the eight murals that I’m fortunate to have painted, the temporary mural banners, electricity boxes, hoardings and windows that my work has been printed on and the several exhibitions I have been part of in the city alone. I wanted to focus on the city as the hub where I have met and connected with so many other creatives which has nourished my passion for art. I painted this as my part of ‘Art Work & Wear,’ a show I curated in August, which brought together an artwork and a set of workwear of 23 artists creating in the City of Adelaide in 2023. I hope these universal nods to food, transport, native flora & fauna, murals, galleries, painting equipment, music and colour also remind you of your experience of your city as creativity is the glue that unites us no matter where we live. I have donated the original artwork to a Palestine Relief Art Auction at LOC in Adelaide where the funds raised will be going straight to the PCRF & Human Appeal in reflection of how lucky we are to be able to live freely and creatively away from the unimaginable constant and horrible violence, destruction and sorrow.
