Bio: Gab specialises in contemporary painting and sign writing – with a focus on figurative scenes as part of an ongoing series that contemplates the relatability of memory through found 35mm slides, film stills and printed ephemera. Sourcing reference from their growing archive, Gab is drawn to the concept of anonymity that is innate in found imagery and its contrary relationship with the sense of familiarity apparent in the scenes illustrated. The experience of peering into another’s documented memories without context or understanding urges curiosity and wonder, while paired with an unwavering feeling of intimacy as though you are accustomed to this time and place that you are only now viewing for the first time. The overlay of text acts as a caption, contributing a narrative to which the viewers are prompted to build upon.
