Shaun Devenney (Dev) was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1995. He was raised there where he was influenced by traditional painting and drawing. He travelled South East Asia and Japan before moving to Australia where he is now based.
He has been moving between regional Victoria and Melbourne during 2020-2021 where he has been doing murals with local communities.
Inspired by classic painters in the Baroque tradition and modern muralists, Dev’s paintings attempt to document parts of everyday life which can otherwise be seen as mundane. His works exude an inherent sentimentality and softness influenced by nostalgia and people he has met during his travels.
Statement about the work – Taking reference from old photographs, especially 35mm film, Shaun is using the medium of oil paint to give a new purpose to old imagery that will one day, physically, cease to exist. Exploring themes of nostalgia, family and humour Shaun extends the lifetime of these captured moments that have now elapsed.
