Glen Downey – This is Fine

By: Glen Downey

Medium: Acrylic on matchbook, on dodgy paper, on found paper, framed.

Glen works as an artist and graphic designer out of The Arts Hole studio in Melbourne’s south east.

Although at the moment he works out his apartment on a desk and in a converted corner splash zone. #stayhome and all.

He has shown artwork in exhibitions around Australia and the world and has produced 5 solo shows of his own work that exhibited in Melbourne and in Brisbane. As a muralist he has painted around Australia and the world, most recently at the Can’t Do Tomorrow festival and he is one half of the most recent Australian Secret Walls winning team.

As a commercial artist he has worked on major campaigns for Coca Cola, Sony, Codemasters and Activision and has worked on murals, apparel and campaigns with Asahi, Red Bull, Vans, RayBan, Ardbeg Distillery, IGN, Boiler Room, Splunk, KFC, Fireball Whisky and a range of other local and international businesses and venues.

In a past life, before switching gears to paints and brushes, Glen was an Art Director on various Australian music and youth magazines, notably K-Zone, PC PowerPlay, Blunt Magazine and Australian Guitar, among others.

His art practice typically combines a reverence for the natural world with a nihilistic view of the human one. He uses a generally freeform improvisational approach to composition, often paying homage to popular and historical culture. Using vivid colour and contrast Glen uses his artwork to synthesise a fantastical view of an increasingly absurd world.
