Gigi Gordes

The idiosyncratic, illustrative characters and humorous small sculptures I weave around streets and laneways, like a Guy Debord Dérive, offer those who stumble across them an opportunity to experience and celebrate our similarities and differences.

Gigi’s sculptures have evolved from disembodied parts that inhabit the streets of Melbourne into hybrids that utilise old and new. Taking disused and forgotten objects and making them into something that has ‘social value’, they are resurrected and given new life. The hybrids take on their own identities; I look for clues behind our tendency to attribute meaning to consumables that give us a sense of belonging.
