David Lee Pereira is a practicing visual artist whose studio paintings, illustrations, large scale murals and public installations delve into the fluidity of gender, sexuality and identity exploring these concepts through the recurring themes of dysphoria and interpersonal relationships. Highly regarded in the Melbourne creative community, David’s portfolio is ever expanding from solo-exhibitions, to the Silo Art Trail and the National Gallery of Victoria’s 2022 Architecture Commission.
As a member of the queer community, David’s work is the product of personal reflection, and is greatly impacted by lived and shared experiences. David’s work aims to increase visibility, inclusion, and acceptance for non-gender conforming communities, and create safe spaces for self-expression that promote ongoing cultural exchange. Influenced by the work of impressionist and surrealist artists Georgia O’Keefe, Dali and Munch, and paying homage to baroque ikebana and dutch still life, Pereira’s floral expressions range from beautifully brutal, to joyous and intimate as these vivid and delicately executed compositions overflow with symbolism and narrative.
